I Wasn't Born to Just Pay Bills and Die
Have you ever heard the infamous quote, "You weren't born to just pay bills and die?" Human beings are unique in the sense that we feel strong emotions, and many of us follow our hearts to new adventures and new purposes. Have you ever seen someone's eyes light up when they speak about something? Or have you ever been so excited about something that you just couldn't quite keep your mouth shut?
In today's society, we are focused on "finding our passion," but what is a passion? What's your passion? Personally, when I first asked myself what I was passionate about, I drew a blank.
Oprah suggests four steps. 1) Love everything you do. 2) Look at your book collection, magazines, DVDs, CDs, and credit card statements. Notice any themes? 3) What do you love to talk about, learn about and/or teach others about? 4) Quit talking and start doing.
On the other hand, Mark Manson downright says "Screw your passion." He explains, "the real truth is that you already enjoy something. You already enjoy many things. You're just choosing to ignore them."
So, what many of us don't realize, is that we're already following our passions; we just may not know it yet. We're suppressing them, and we just have to get out there and keep doing what we're doing. When you're having fun, you're finding your passion.
For me, I started out with a long list of things I'm passionate about. I love the outdoors. I love hiking, kayaking, and exploring national parks. I love my family. I have a cat and a dog, two brothers, and two wonderful parents. I love God. I love exploring scripture, learning new worship songs, and going to church. I love my community. I love reaching out to new people and inspiring them to be better versions of themselves.
But, I thought to myself, how do all of these things connect? I obviously can't focus on all of them, but I discovered an underlying theme. I enjoy actively participating in making the world a better place, and I love making people happy. Although it's a bit cliche, it's true. I'm in love with my life, and this world, and these people, and I want to share my love with all of you.
An introduction to my passion blog can be found under the post titled, "In a World Where You Can Be Anything, Be Kind."
I talked about this Rube Goldberg machine for months.
